Saturday, October 22: Block Work
Block Work is a city program to bring residents and community volunteers together to build cleaner, safer neighborhoods, on block at a time.
Location: 500 block of West Council Street in Salisbury.
Time: 2-hour time slots between 8 am – 6 pm; You can sign up ONLINE, either individually or as a group. The volunteer form with scope of work can be found on their website:

Projects encompass the exterior of the homes and include carpentry, painting, landscaping, and general clean-up in a one-block area. Long term maintenance responsibility is assumed by block property owners, residents, and neighborhood participants.
Participants receive: T-shirt, mask, gloves, meals, snacks, and drinks.
Sunday, October 23: Happy’s Farm
Happy’s Farm is a Rowan County non-profit that provides affordable tutoring, after school care, and behavioral coaching to young people in a western setting. Their mission is to instill in children that (1) they are loved; (2) they are important; and (3) they can do almost anything if they apply themselves.
Location: 985 Parks Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.
Time: 2 – 5 pm, followed by a hot dog supper, provided by the Farm. All materials provided.
Projects include:
- Barn Expansion to utilize both sides for the Reading to Barnyard Animals Program. Work includes installing boards and insulation on the middle wall separating the two rooms.
- Painting the facility’s military train that has been rebuilt. This is a favorite activity for the children.
- Volunteers can bake cupcakes (on-site) and wrap for freezing, so they can be used later as a cake decorating activity for the children.
- Younger children could organize the play dishes, food, games, etc. in the Western theme play buildings.
