A six-week course, Israel and Palestine Conflict: Christian Response, will be offered at St. John’s, Salisbury, beginning January 16, at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to all. Dr. Michael Connor, St. John’s member, recently spent three months in Palestine and Israel as an Ecumenical Accompanier, providing “protective presence” for people like Bedouin shepherds and schoolchildren in the South Hebron Hills area of the occupied West Bank. Dr. Connor will offer sessions about the history of the region, personal experiences during his service there, and ways Christians might respond.

Week 1: Overview of political decisions and wars/violence resulting in current conflict.

Week 2: The origins of modern Zionism and current policies, overview of Christian Zionism, Messianic Fulfillment Theology, and Islam perspectives
Week 3: Personal examples as well as trends related to resource access, harassment and destruction of private property and relocation.
Week 4: Trends related to restricted movement, constant threat of bombing as well as access to water and electricity.
Week 5: Overview of how the christian community (including ELCJHL and ELCA)  provide various community services while seeking justice and promoting peace.
Week 6: Overview of the Joint (Israeli and Palestinian) initiatives, EAPPI,  Kairos Document and ELCA – Peace Not Walls.
